Over 50s fixture arranged + local projects in March

In a week tinged with sad loss and happy memories of both Paul McCarthy and Tony Pilcher, we all look to future memories as the Fleet hopefully sails on to another victory today against East Thurrock United. Helping to create new memories and as promised, Kenny Clark has organised the first competitive EUFC Over 50s Walking Football game, an away fixture against the Medway Marauders (those mean-looking gentlemen pictured above) to take place on Friday, 28th April at 12.30pm at the Strood Leisure Centre.

Kenny is still working on the first home game to be played at Stonebridge Road before the end of the season.

Other Community events taking place in March include the official unveiling of Gravesend’s restored Clock Tower (pictured right) on the evening of Friday 17 March by The Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr Greta Goatley. The occasion will be marked by turning on the new lighting scheme at approximately 7pm. The restoration of the Clock Tower was made possible by the National Lottery through a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £172,300, with the remaining funding provided by Gravesham Borough Council.

A commemorative parade is also being held to mark the 400th anniversary of Pocahontas’ arrival and death in Gravesend. Gravesham council has been working with a number of schools and community groups across the borough to remember the life of Pocahontas. The Pocahontas 400 project has included a series of activities including talks by local historians and academic lecturers, art workshops, a visit from former US Ambassador Matthew Barzun and a commemorative parade.

The key event in the Pocahontas 400 calendar is a community parade on Tuesday, 21 March.

Everyone is invited to the riverside at St Andrew’s Arts Centre at 1.30pm where the parade will begin. It will then go up the High Street, down Jury Street and on down to St George’s church and the Pocahontas statue.
