Fleet add Gower power

Jamie Day has moved quickly to fill the gap left by Dean Rance’s injury, recruiting former Southend, Swansea City and Charlton midfielder Mark Gower on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The former Tottenham youth may be remembered by Fleet fans when he was part of Barnet’s Conference squad from 2001-03. He moved to Southend United in 2003 and went on to play more than 200 games and score 40 goals for the Roots Hall club where he won the League Two play-offs and the League One title, going on to play in the Championship.

In 2008 Swansea City signed him and he spent two more seasons in the Championship and one in the Premier League following the Swans’ promotion in 2010/11, appearing at Wembley in that season’s victorious play-off final. He featured in the Premier League under now-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and played at the top level as recently as the 2012/13 season.

After leaving Swansea, he moved to Charlton Athletic and this season the vastly experienced 36-year-old was a free agent, allowing Fleet boss Day to pounce to add more genuine quality to his squad.
