The new boys “don’t feel like new players”

Two of the Fleet’s new signings have declared they already feel at home in the camp after less than a week of mixing with their new teammates. In a video interview from the club’s Portugal training base, Jack Payne and Danny Mills declared their satisfaction with the progress made so far.

For Payne, who has experienced such a pre-season before playing for the likes of Gillingham and Blackpool, he is impressed that the Fleet measure up against their League counterparts.

“It’s like a Football League club so for me it’s the same,” Payne said. “You can tell what the club’s about coming to a place like this. The quality’s been good, for me coming into the club not knowing too many people, to see the standard of the training has really impressed me – from the staff side and the players. I don’t feel like a new player, we’ve been [in training] since Thursday, I just feel part of the group.”

For former Whitehawk striker Mills, the experience has been somewhat different as since playing for Peterborough, he hasn’t been part of a professional setup for some time. “It’s been very different for me,” he remarked. “I haven’t played full-time football for five years so it’s brilliant to be in an environment where things are done very professionally. Everything’s just set up for the football club to do well. I’ve never done a pre-season training camp before.”

And Mills offered a glimpse into how Daryl McMahon’s side might shape up from August and who could be supplying the assists for hungry strikers. “The gaffer’s set out his stall and said he wants to play with high tempo, he wants everything done with high intensity,” Mills said. “The new signings, we’ve all gelled and the boys have welcomed us with open arms. Myles Weston has been really sharp and really intense and I think he’s going to be a great asset.”
