Fleet’s 2-1 win over Weston-super-Mare last night has established a new club record, it has been confirmed.
An 11-match unbeaten run at the start of the season in all competitions has never been achieved before, bettering the 10-match runs set in 1950/51 and 1984/85.
This season’s squad still have a little way to go, however, to top the unbeaten start in the league which was set by the 1974/75 squad – that team lost several cup games in September, but remained unbeaten in a league match through to January.
Fleet boss Daryl McMahon has repeatedly made clear that he sets little store by table positions and records this early in the season and is concerned only with his next match and the club’s final position – but it’s a statistic to satisfy many supporters who wondered how this start to the season compared to others.
