Preview: Woking

It’s number two of three consecutive Saturday Kuflink Stadium appearances for the Fleet as Woking travel to Kent. The visitors earned their first points of the season on Tuesday night with their hosts determined to add their own at home this Bank Holiday weekend.

Dion Kelly-Evans is suspended for the visitors after his red card against Gateshead last week while Rohan Ince is a long-term injury concern. Latest signing Matt Ward, an ex-Ipswich youngster who arrived in midweek, made his debut off the bench on Tuesday,

Last time out
The Cards picked up their first win of the season against Dagenham & Redbridge in midweek with a late strike from Charley Kendall in the 80th minute. The Fleet, however, suffered a third defeat when, despite fighting back to 2-2, a late goal from Harvey Greenslade secured the three points for the Glovers.

Previous encounters
During the most recent meeting between the two sides, the Fleet secured a 1-0 victory in a tight affair that saw Dominic Poleon’s effort separate the teams – the first back-to-back win of last season. The first meeting last season, in September 2023, saw the Fleet travel to the Laithwaite Community Stadium and share the spoils. Jim Kellermann converted from the spot against his new team in that one, a goal cancelled out by a headed effort from Ouss Cissé in the second half.

Recent arrivals
Dale Gorman arrived from Barnet following two years at The Hive and he has since been named as the Cards’ captain for the 2024/25 campaign. He has already served a one-game ban for a second yellow card on the opening day. Previous spells have seen Gorman feature for Yeovil, Leyton Orient and Stevenage as well as in Northern Ireland with Glentoran. Experienced midfielder Harry Beautyman has also joined the Cards from recently relegated Sutton United. He spent six years with the U’s where he enjoyed promotion from the National League and he played alongside Louis John for a number of years.

The manager
Michael Doyle was appointed as Woking manager in December 2023 and has taken charge of 26 games since, winning nine of those. The Irishman has had a strong footballing career having played for the likes of Sheffield United (188 appearances), Coventry City (332 appearances) and Portsmouth (90 appearances), with over 800 professional matches to his name.

Club connections
Summer signing Jim Kellermann spent two seasons with Woking from 2022–24 and featured 63 times for the Cards. In reverse, Toby Edser featured 25 times in two loan spells for the visitors. Two members of the Woking squad are well known to Danny Searle, having been signed by him for Aldershot – Jermaine Anderson and Lewis Walker.
