Preview: Oldham Athletic

The Fleet return to the action at the Kuflink Stadium this Saturday at the later kick-off time of 5:30pm in front of the DAZN cameras for the visit of sixth-place Oldham Athletic.

Last time out
Oldham secured their third successive win after hosting early leaders Forest Green Rovers – and for the third successive game, Mike Fondop was on the scoresheet in a 1-0 win. That followed victories over Yeovil Town and Woking that ended Oldham’s run of four 1-1 draws before that.

Previous affairs
The two sides have a short history that only goes back to last season. The first meeting at Boundary Park last November saw the Fleet come away with a 4-1 win after a run of eight without a victory. Greg Cundle opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes with late goals from Dominic Poleon, Nathan Odokonyero and Dominic Samuel cancelling out James Norwood’s penalty equaliser for Oldham.

The return fixture in February was a goalless affair as former Fleet boss Danny Searle took charge of his first game for the Fleet, also one in front of the TV cameras.

Who’s who
Mathew Hudson is in goal for for the Latics. He signed in December 2022 from Preston North End, having also spent time with National League North side Buxton. The goalkeeper broke through the academy at Preston and also spent time on loan with Bury and Bamber Bridge.

Reagan Ogle is summer signing who arrived from Scunthorpe United following two years with the Irons. The right-back has also played for Hartlepool United and became Micky Mellon’s first signing for 2024/25. The defender moved to England from his native Australia at the age of 11, joining the youth ranks at Accrington Stanley.

Tom Conlon is the new skipper this season, having arrived at Boundary Park in January with bags of EFL experience. He spent six years with Port Vale and won several player of the year awards. He was part of the Vale squad which won the League Two play-offs in 2022.

James Norwood has featured against the Fleet for Tranmere Rovers where he won back-to-back promotions under Micky Mellon. He arrived at Boundary Park following  a year with Barnsley. He started out on the South Coast with Eastbourne and has since played for Forest Green Rovers and Ipswich Town.

The manager
Micky Mellon is a familiar face in the Vanarama National League having secured double promotions with Tranmere Rovers and taken Fleetwood Town from the National North to the Football League. He has also been in charge of Dundee United, won promotion at Shrewsbury Town and also had a second spell at Tranmere.

Club connections
Dominic Poleon spent two seasons at Oldham from 2014–16 while former Fleet loanee striker Alex Reid made the move to Oldham in 2022.
