Preview: Maidenhead United

The Fleet are back on the road tomorrow as they head to York Road for the first away trip of 2024 with two back-to-back away days upcoming this week. Declan Skura (pictured) has another chance to impress at centre-back while Jordon Ibe was included in a league matchday squad for the first time this season last Saturday.

Form guide
Maidenhead United are 16th in the National League, five points above the relegation zone. The Magpies have had a break in play due to the blank weekend caused by their Isuzu FA Trophy elimination followed by the postponement of their visit to FC Halifax on Saturday. Their last competitive match was January 6th when they hosted Bromley and that game ended goalless. Prior to this, the Magpies’ previous match was on Boxing Day when they hosted Wealdstone but the reverse fixture was once again postponed.

Last time out
The earlier fixture back in November was another Tuesday night that saw the spoils shared at the Kuflink. The Fleet found the breakthrough when Dominic Poleon scored from a tight angle and had the chance for three points but the lead wouldn’t last long as Reece Smith’s strike from inside of the area levelled things. Maidenhead have won two games since that meeting and still can’t breathe easily with points needed to pull further away from the drop zone.

Squad changes
Sam Barratt isn’t really a new face having played for the club for years previously but after returning on loan from Barnet at the start of November, he has now made the move permanent.

James Golding, meanwhile, has returned to parent club Oxford United since the last meeting with the Fleet.

The manager
Maidenhead’s manager will need no introduction to football fans as Alan Devonshire made 358 appearances for West Ham United and was capped for England eight times. He took the reins at York Road back in 2015 and has managed over 400 games for the Magpies, guiding them to the Vanarama National League in 2017 by two points from the Fleet.

Club connections
Alan Devonshire played alongside Joe Martin’s dad Alvin Martin at West Ham United for a number of seasons during the 1970s and 1980s. Maidenhead winger Ashley Nathaniel-George spent a short time on loan with the Fleet in 2021/22 while goalkeeper Craig Ross and midfielder Kane Ferdinand shared time at Woking together alongside Toby Edser.
