Preview: Kent Senior Cup Final

It’s a trip to Priestfield this Wednesday evening as the Fleet face Welling United in their second successive Kent Senior Cup Final.

Opposition focus
Welling’s last six games (as below) have seen them earn one win, one draw and suffer four defeats which has left them deep in the relegation places in National South.

Chesham Utd 4-1 Welling United
Welling United 2-0 Worthing
Welling United 1-2 Hemel Hempstead
Farnborough 2-1 Welling United
Truro City 3-2 Welling United
Welling United 2-2 Slough Town

They gave themselves hope with an excellent win over league leaders Worthing recently but a heavy defeat at Chesham on Saturday leaves the Wings seven points from safety with five to play. They host Hornchurch on Saturday and still have Maidstone United to play in the run-in.

Welling haven’t won the Kent Senior Cup since 2009 while for the Fleet it’s been five years less than that with a win against Dover at Priestfield in 2014. This will be the first time the clubs have met in the final.

Who’s who
Scott Kashket is a former Wycombe Wanderers striker who made over 150 appearances for the Chairboys, scoring 31 times for the EFL side. Kashket departed Wycombe for Crewe Alexandra during the 2021/22 season. The 29-year-old signed for Welling in February having originally been at the club on loan nine years ago.

Deon Moore emerged through the academy ranks at Peterborough United. The 25-year-old joined the Wings in February from Woking and has also represented Guyana on 12 occasions. He has also played for Dulwich Hamlet and Chelmsford City.

Gene Kennedy initially arrived at Park View Road on loan from Colchester United back in February 2024 to boost Welling’s survival chances last season. He did just that as the Wings survived and the 21-year-old midfielder has since played 55 matches, scoring nine times for the Wings.

In addition, Welling have recently borrowed former Fleet loanee Jez Davies from Salford City. The midfielder didn’t play in the Kent Senior Cup for the Fleet so is not cup-tied and could line up against his former teammates.

Priestfield connection
There are plenty of players on both sides with connections to Priestfield Stadium. Both managers – Josh Wright and Welling caretaker Brian Statham – are ex-Gills and that goes for Luke O’Neill, Lewis Page, Dom Samuel, Greg Cundle, Ben Chapman and Callum Harriott in the Fleet squad as well. Welling’s ex-Gills include Scott Kashket and TJ Bramble.

The two clubs met in pre-season at Park View Road
