Preview: Cambridge United

The Fleet return to the Kuflink Stadium this Saturday in search of a fifth straight pre-season win as League One Cambridge United await.

Danny Searle’s squad head into this match off the back of a 3-0 victory at Tonbridge Angels as Kwame Thomas took his tally to three goals in two games, in the absence of five-goal Dominic Samuel in midweek.

The last time Cambridge United travelled to the Kuflink Stadium was back in 2018 when a 2-2 draw was the result in a pre-season friendly (pictured below). Two goals in the last three minutes – scored by Danny Kedwell and Myles Weston – earned a stirring comeback for the Fleet after George Maris had scored twice for the U’s.

Having recently played newly promoted local side CS Maritomo and Bromley during a pre-season camp in Portugal, Cambridge return with a Friday night friendly at Braintree before all eyes turn to Ebbsfleet. Their outing against Bromley saw them play a two-game affair, drawing 2-2 and losing 2-0 with a number of academy players involved alongside most of the first-team.

Cambridge are managed by former Swansea City player and boss Garry Monk and arrive with several new signings for their fourth season in League One. A standout amongst those is midfielder Korey Smith from Derby County who has played most of his career in the Championship, while Northern Ireland international Shayne Lavery also comes in from Blackpool. Former Spurs youngster and ex-Gillingham forward Ryan Loft, who has played in pre-season at the Kuflink previously, is another new face.
