The news off the pitch has unsurprisingly taken the focus early this week following the departure of Danny Searle and Anwar Uddin but the Fleet now have to focus on the task in hand, with Josh Wright taking charge for the visit of Aldershot Town this Tuesday night.
Last time out
The Fleet’s visitors Aldershot hosted Rochdale at the EBB Stadium on Saturday and succumbed to a 2-0 defeat courtesy of first-half goals, the first time the Shots have failed to score this season. There have been plenty of goals otherwise in Aldershot games in 2024/25 with Tommy Widdrington’s side amongst the leading scorers in the division – but also having conceded almost as many.
Previous affairs
Last season saw both sides pick up a win on home soil – at the Kuflink Stadium, goals from Franklin Domi (pictured) and Dom Poleon inspired the Fleet to a 2-0 victory. The reverse fixture proved a tougher task for the Fleet with a 4-1 defeat at the EBB Stadium, despite Toby Edser firing the visitors ahead in the opening minutes.
Fleet fans have enjoyed memorable moments against Aldershot in the past, including the 2007 FA Trophy semi-finals and the 2018 play-off eliminator. Lately (since 2017), it’s been two wins and two defeats apiece at the Kuflink Stadium.
Who’s who
Marcus Dewhurst, signed from Wealdstone, has got the nod ahead of Dutchman Jordi van Stappershoef in goal this season so far while defender Christian Maghoma is getting a run in the side after spending all of last season out following an injury in pre-season, just weeks after his arrival from Eastleigh..
Son of manager Tommy, midfielder Theo Widdrington arrived at Aldershot in the summer of 2023 following his departure from King’s Lynn – his father’s former club. Widdrington Senior has signed a few of his squad from King’s Lynn and another two arrived this summer.
Attacking midfielder, the 35-year-old James Henry, has struck most of the Shots’ goals so far with five from seven matches. A new signing this summer, he boasts a vast amount of EFL experience with lengthy spells at Reading and most recently Oxford United where he spent seven years.
The manager
In the dugout is Tommy Widdrington. Previous managerial roles have seen him at King’s Lynn Town, Eastbourne Borough and Salisbury. The Shots manager also had a successful playing career, with appearances for the likes of Hartlepool United, Port Vale, Grimsby Town and Southampton.
Club connections
There are plenty of ex-Shots faces in the Fleet squad, with Tyler Cordner, Toby Edser, Jim Kellermann, Giles Phillips, Craig Tanner and most recently Kwame Thomas having all appeared at the EBB Stadium previously.
