Kwesi comes home as Fleet land NLS scoring sensation

One of the National League South’s leading goalscorers will be at the Kuflink Stadium next season as Fleet can today announce the signing of Kwesi Appiah.

The former Boreham Wood striker fired 24 league goals last season to help take the Hertfordshire side back into the National League at the first time of asking, ending 2024/25 in second place in the division’s scoring charts. That total included two hat-tricks and four braces to round-off a hugely successful campaign for the former Fleet youth graduate.

Kwesi Appiah made five appearances for the Fleet as a teenager, scoring once

Appiah, a Ghana international who played in the 2015 African Cup of Nations Final, began his career in the Fleet’s youth side and made his debut aged 17 in the Kent Senior Cup in November 2007. He scored in his home league debut in the Conference against Woking the following season after coming off the bench in a 2-0 win.

The young prospect was signed by Peterborough United in October 2008 before time back in non-league football that included prolific spells with Kings Lynn Town (nine goals in 10 games) and at Margate in 2011/12 where he scored 35 goals in 34 games.

Such phenomenal scoring statistics earned Appiah a move to Crystal Palace in January 2012 and he played six times in the Championship for the Eagles while also finding the back of the net on loan elsewhere in the EFL for the likes of Yeovil Town, Cambridge United, Notts County and Reading.

He ended a five-year stay at Selhurst Park with the short move to AFC Wimbledon in 2017 which began three seasons in League One. Meanwhile, he had made the first of 15 caps for Ghana, scoring his first international goal in the AFCON (above).

After leaving Wimbledon in 2020, Appiah had a short stay in the Indian Super League before representing Crawley Town, Colchester United and for the past two seasons Boreham Wood, where he enjoyed success last year with one of the most prolific returns of his career.

The former Fleet youth player expressed his delight at returning to the club where it all began for him, telling FleetTV: “I cherished starting my career here and it was a really important ingredient in coming back. I’m extremely proud of that journey because it set me up to be the person I am today and set me on my way. Now I’m hoping to achieve a very successful season for the team and the club… and it’s why I’m driven to score goals and to drive the standards around the club. It’s going to be a really solid group with a good dynamic.”
