Fleet take Tanga’s talents on board

Attacking pacy wide man Jephte Tanga is the second new face announced today as the Fleet can confirm the former Leyton Orient youngster’s signature.

The sought-after 20-year-old arrives after leaving Brisbane Road earlier this summer and he caught plenty of attention last season in the National League South where he spent half a season each with Welling United and Maidstone United – all but ever-present for both clubs, playing 48 games in all competitions with four goals and five assists.

The versatile Tanga – known as ‘JT’ – can play in a number of roles but is usually deployed wide. He came through Orient’s youth ranks and gained initial senior experience at the likes of Sutton Common Rovers, Royston Town and Cray Wanderers where he won players’ player of the year while still a teenager.

The Lambeth-born player then attracted plenty of plaudits with Welling and Maidstone with performances that made it clear he was ready for a further step up in 2024/25.

And it is the Fleet where he will make his mark this season despite having numerous suitors around the National League.

“He’s earned his contract with us and he backed himself to come in and earn that this summer,” said Fleet boss Danny Searle. “He’s very experienced despite such a young age. We wanted a player in a wide area who can affect the front three and is capable of turning it on in the final third if we play three at the back. And there’s plenty to come from him.”
