Fleet 1 Gillingham 0

Liam Enver-Marum’s 66th minute goal gave the Fleet a 1-0 win over League Two neighbours Gillingham as Liam Daish’s threadbare side continued their impressive summer build-up. The visitors fielded a smattering of first-teamers including ex-Fleet loanees Denis Oli and last season’s goalkeeping hero Daren Hawkes, who started on the bench.

The home side made most of the early running, GIannoulis Fakinos and Tom Phipp rattling a couple of shots goalward before Michael West tested the keeper with a deft shot from a cross. PASE trialist Lanre Azeez looked assured out wide and he headed a chance wide of the post, while Marum was denied by a good save from Paulo Gazzaniga.

Gills were kept to one decent chance in the first half and the Fleet were on the front foot early in the second as well, Phipp hitting the woodwork and Marum again coming close. But the in-form new boy was not to be denied on 66 minutes when substitute Dan Sabola supplied a weighted through pass and Marum ran through to fire home past Hawkes. Fakinos and West both then had chances to extend the margin but it stayed at 1-0 as the Fleet saw out the remainder of the game without undue pressure.

TEAM: Welch, Howe, Herd, Stavrinou (Hicks 76), Dixon-Baker, Simpemba, West (Aaron Williams 73), Fakinos, Enver-Marum (Lokando 83), Azeez (Sabola 64), Phipp.
