Training was a morning session only as the players prepared for Saturday’s morning match v Portuguese second division side SC Olhanense (pictured). The friendly against the former Portuguese champions (Olhanense won the national league in 1924!) was a fairly late arranged affair with Fleet having attempted to arrange a match with several opponents in the past week or so.
The players relaxed by the pool on Friday afternoon in readiness for the evening quiz.
Once again the evening was awash with challenges and protests. There were five teams and each marked the others’ answers which any right-thinking person would mark with a degree of flexibility – but we had Gordon Grekko rejected as it was not Gekko and an attempt to rule out Max Verstappen for use of too many letter Ts!
The best answer of the night was from the “The Thickos” team who believed the Titanic was built in Birmingham, which is remarkable when you consider England’s second city has no sea access to launch a boat.
The €100 prize once again headed the way of the management with Macca and his crew of erudite thinkers topping the knowledge pile, while the ‘New Kids On The Block’ picked up the Peter Varney Wooden Spoon, trailing by 10 points.
For the record the teams and scores were….
Gaffers Goafers (McMahon / Gritt / Long / Jordan / The Danzeys / Jupp / 40 points
Old Stagers (Fish / Clark / Lewis / Kedwell / Sheringham / Miles / Parkes / 36 points
Medical Maniacs (Croswell / Hards / Bauld / Cooper / Phillips / Butler-Gallie / 34 points
The Thickos (Greenidge / Shields / Bubb / Deering / Rance / Ashmore / Kissock / 32 Points
New Kids on The Block (Connors / Winfield / McLean / Cook / Miller-Neave / Boulding / Lopez (trialist) / 30 points
