HISTON 3-2 EBBSFLEET UNITED
The Fleet’s play-off campaign underwent a serious derailment in
Cambridgeshire this evening as Histon completed a league double over
the men from Kent, coming from behind to win by the odd goal in five.
The home side, with ambitions of a play-off spot themselves, opened the
scoring early on when Daniel Wright put away the impressive Nathaniel
Wright-Percival’s pass with only nine minutes on the clock. The Fleet
clawed their way back into it on 24 minutes when Luke Moore’s searching
effort found John Akinde on the edge of the box and the Fleet striker
duly claimed his eighth goal of the season.
Fleet’s marvellous week looked set to continue when Stacy Long put them
in front on the stroke of half-time, flashing a Neil Barrett assist
past Danny Naisbitt in the home goal. And Long was at the heart of
controversy on the hour mark – moments after Paul McCarthy had hit the
post with a header – when he was felled in the penalty area but the
referee waved away protests. Fleet’s game went off the boil after that
and Histon duly capitalised on 74 minutes when Mat Mitchell-King headed
home from Gareth Gwillim’s cross after his corner had been cleared
Things got worse three minutes later when Peter Hawkins clearence
cannoned off Neil Andrews and Cronin could only claw at air as the ball
looped over him into the net.
