Fleet 1-0 Chippenham Town

Fleet made a winning start to their home campaign to add to the same on the road with an Aaron Cosgrave winner with 20 minutes to go.

There was one change as last week’s match winner Kwesi Appiah had an injury and that saw him replaced by Dom Samuel.

Early pressure from the Fleet allowed George Moncur to get an effort away from just outside the box and his curling effort was just wide of the mark. Moncur was busy in attack but Chippenham dealt with his next advance as they blocked a delivery from wide on the left.

Mark Cousins’ first call into action came just past the quarter-hour mark when he tipped a low effort wide for a corner as Chippenham began to get a foothold.

Ben Coker was withdrawn after 16 minutes after going down injured and substitute Toby Edser came close to finding the breakthrough when he ran through but goalkeeper Will Henry swiftly arrived to gather before the Fleet midfielder could take his shot.

Samuel found himself in a similar position to Edser with Henry clearing the ball ahead of his run but only as far as Josh Coley who fired the ball back on goal but the Chippenham keeper made the save.

The Fleet  continued to push on in the closing stages of the first half and Charlie Seaman saw a lot of the ball down the right as well from a corner that floated in and clipped the crossbar.

Chippenham didn’t pose too much threat in the opening 45 minutes though they had a period in and around the Fleet box that required some disciplined defending before Cousins was called on to make another comfortable save before the whistle.

The last action of the half saw Moncur in the box again as he picked out Ben Chapman but the attempt was blocked by Henry.

The Fleet were on the front foot once again in the second half – Tom Dallison’s tidy diagonal ball towards Seaman was pulled back by the flag.

The flag was up again after it appeared the Fleet had got the opener on 53 minutes, Samuel slotting the ball home but in the build up, the assistant spotted an offside.

Both managers made changes to their side as the clock ticked past the hour mark and Josh Wright’s introduction of Cosgrave proved vital. It was the No. 9 who found the breakthrough when Josh Passley’s delivery picked out Moncur. He swiftly laid the ball to the arriving Cosgrave in the middle of the box who stabbed the ball home to give the Fleet the lead with 18 minutes remaining.

Cosgrave was convinced he should have had a penalty a few minutes later when he was bundled over after tangling with Luke Haines (below) but the referee was lenient on that one.

Chippenham applied some late pressure with seven minutes of time added and Cousins had to pull off an excellent save as Harlee Vozza closed in from a run from the right and the Fleet goalkeeper pushed the ball behind and to safety.

There was no time left for Chippenham to mount another attack even though they sent Henry upfield and the Fleet added three more points to their early tally.
