Weston glad of a short turnaround

Myles Weston picked up the man-of-the-match champagne this afternoon but after the manner of defeat to AFC Fylde, he’s glad there’s a chance to put things right at the earliest opportunity.

The stand-in left-back told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster that a midweek game is the best option for all the squad to avoid them stewing for a week over today’s match.

“I’m happy there’s a game on Tuesday so we can bounce back straight away,” he said. “If we had to wait till Saturday we’d probably be pondering on this result a little bit. But now we can react and get the result we need and get the performance in that we need. I don’t think it matters where it is [home or away]. We have to put in a performance regardless because we lost today so we don’t have to wait too long to try and rectify what happened today. It’s always a good game against Dover. They’re supposed to be our local rivals so it’s always an intense game and it’s never easy. We have to bring our A game.”

Like his manager, Weston felt 3-1 was a touch harsh on his side, who were undone by the finishing of Danny Rowe.

“I don’t think it was a 3-1 game at all,” he said, “especially when it was 0-0 at half-time so it’s a tough one to take. [Rowe] is a very good player, he’s capable of scoring them type of goals so it’s just for us not to give him the chance to. We’ve played against him and he scored against us last season in the last minute and today he’s scored two, a free-kick and from the touchline. We’ve just got to learn from it and know he’s going to be a threat.

“We’ve got goals in our team [too], it’s just about scoring them. It’s early in the season, I think we’ve had a good first month. Now in September we’ve got to carry it on, we’ve got to continue the momentum that we had in the first month and take it into this month because we’ve got a good squad and it’s competitive. Where we’ve lost today, we definitely have to try and bounceback [at Dover]. It’s important we get a result and put a performance on. We’ve got to continue our away form and try to bring that away form to the Kuflink.”

It was Weston’s third game in a more defensive role and the former Gillingham and Southend player is embracing whatever’s thrown his way.

“Wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I’m happy to do it,” he explained. “He said today that he’s going to play me left-back and I’m happy to play there and I think the more I play there, the more I’ll get used to it. If he wants me to play on the wing, I’ll play on the wing. Wherever he wants me to play, I’ll play… just not in goal! I’m for the team, if it’s for me to defend, I’ll defend. If it’s for me to attack, then I’ll attack but it’s a team game. Today it was left-back and right wing-back and wherever I can help the team I will.”
