Kenny Clark was probably the happiest man in Stonebridge Road yesterday after a goal against his former employers, a clean sheet on his 100th club appearance and a second successive man of the match award at home.
“If Carlsberg did non-league weekends, that’d be perfect,” Clark told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster. “A hundred games, set it off with a goal and a bottle of bubbly, it was perfect.”
After strong criticism following the defeat at Kidderminster, the Fleet defender said he and his teammates needed no reminding what they had to do against Chelmsford Ciy. “That weren’t us at all, for whatever reason we weren’t good enough,” Clark said of the FA Trophy defeat. “We all knew that and the gaffer made sure we knew about it. As a whole team we needed to bounce back from last week, we knew that was below our standards. We had a point to prove and made a little gap between us and Chelmsford.”
The 2-0 win meant Fleet were the first club to defeat Chelmsford since early November and the players were aware they’d have to be on top of their game to secure the points. “We know that Chelmsford are a decent team, they’re not far behind us,” Clark said. “Every team that Rod Stringer’s in charge of, you know you’re in for a fight. I thought the back four, and Nathan with his save in the first couple of minutes, really stood up to that challenge and the boys in front of us, when we did get it down and play, played really well.”
Fleet face Poole Town next Saturday, the last team to beat Chelmsford before ourselves, and Clark believes his side are confident enough to keep racking up the points, game by game: “We know exactly how Maidenhead are feeling, we’ve just got to go about our business and keep winning. We’ve set the bar, it was two totally different performances, last week was well below par, today is where we need to keep it for the rest of the season and we know the coaches and everyone around the club won’t let us slip. Especially in training, we’re always working hard and it’s up to us to maintain our levels.”
