Fleet boss “gutted” for travelling fans

Daryl McMahon apologised for his side’s defeat in the Buildbase FA Trophy this afternoon as Fleet’s travelling support were left disappointed by the manner of the exit.

“Everything about it was poor and I’m gutted for the amount of fans that travelled and paid and came to watch that, it’s ridiculous really,” the Fleet boss told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster. “It’s sorry from me to them for that performance today. It wasn’t just the two goals in the first half, it was the whole game we were poor. There’s no other way of describing the performance today.

“Kidderminster thoroughly deserved their win. They were excellent in the first half and pulled us apart with their movement and some fantastic football.”

McMahon was disappointed with the manner of Kidderminster’s first goal, when the defence stood off to allow left back Josh Ezewele a run on goal but the whole 90 minutes left the manager feeling his side put in one of the worst performances he has seen.

“There wasn’t a response from us, from what I’d expect of us. The first goal in particular was poor from our perspective, good play from their left back but from us it was poor defending. Prior to that we had a couple of chances ourselves with Sam Deering and Darren McQueen but we weren’t able to take them. We can’t complain.

“I’ve been at Ebbsfleet three years now as a player and everything else and that’s the worst we’ve been in three and a half years. We didn’t get into gear at all.”

With Chelmsford City coming up on Saturday, McMahon knows his side will need a significant improvement but he’s confident they will. “We’ve been beaten before and bounced back and we’ll do it again,” he said. “It’s just disappointing the way we went about our business today.

“Sometimes when you get beat like that, it’s a kick that livens you up again and we need to. Some players came in today that haven’t played in a while and didn’t play great and they got an opportunity to play and perform for next week and they didn’t. So it makes it easy if Dave Winfield and Andy Drury are fit, they’ll come back into the team.”
