Fleet boss Daryl McMahon felt another crack at Woking was the least his side deserved as they left it late to extend their Trophy interest to at least next week.
“It’s a good opportunity to go there and play there,” McMahon told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster. “I don’t see it as a hindrance. I’m looking forward to pitting ourselves against Woking again. We deserved another game without a doubt today. There was a 15 to 20-minute spell in the first half where Woking did take over but we finished the half strongly. The last 20 or 25 minutes [in the second half] we were constantly attacking and we dominated it from there. The work rate of the team, the defensive shape was excellent, we restricted a striker who’s got a lot of goals this year to literally nothing so we’ve got to go and do the same on Tuesday night.”
McMahon praised Andy Drury’s influence as the midfielder provided the assist for Dave Winfield’s later header. “He opens the pitch up really well, he’s very laid back and technically and tactically brilliant,” McMahon said of Drury. “There’s 10 years in between the two of them and Andy’s the player Powelly should try and become. He’s had a terrific career and Powelly can emulate what Andy’s done, which I think he can. Talent-wise he’s one of the best in non-league football.”
And the Fleet boss also praised his substitutes who helped turn the flow in Fleet’s favour in the second half. “Stuey’s got terrific energy and it was one of those games that was so stop-start we couldn’t get our flow going. It suits Stuey a little bit to go and ruffle a few feathers and he did that and created his own tempo. Keds did well too, and Darren when he came on, he got into the pocket and held the ball up well for us.”
And of the late goal that went in off Woking’s Joey Jones, McMahon was in no mood to argue over whether Winfield will claim it or not. “He’ll probably claim it,” McMahon conceded. “He’s too big to argue with. If he says it’s his goal, it’s his goal.”
