Ebbsfleet United boss Daryl McMahon was a happy man after his side recorded an opening day win larger than any other seen at Stonebridge Road in 70 years. It equalled the previous best first-day start, a 4-0 win at Andover some 42 years ago.
“It was a really good start to score four goals and keep a clean sheet at home,” McMahon told Charles Webster. “I’m delighted with the performance.”
The manager can also be pleased with his half-time reshuffle. “Reiss [Greenidge] was on a booking and their lad Baggie was causing some problems in the first half. I thought we needed to change the shape a little bit to stop the ball getting to him and then put Shieldsy higher.”
And McMahon also remarked on those players who weren’t in the squad today who will be chasing the 11 places for the shirt in coming weeks. “We’ve got a decent group, the lads who came on were terrific and the lads who started did well. We’ve got six or seven very good players not available today [in addition to the existing injuries, Mark Phillips was suspended and Bradley Bubb had taken a knock]. Players have got to perform. If you perform, you play. If you don’t, you don’t… It’s one game, but it was a positive start.”
