Danzey’s diary: day four

As on all previous days the players were down for breakfast at 7.15am and out on the training field at 8.30am.

Daryl’s complex setup (to my eyes, at least!) of mannequins, cones and poles resembled an obstacle course and once training started the players were put through a gruelling series of tests.

There has been a flu bug in the camp and six players have been on antibiotics but that hasn’t stopped them training – despite some frightening coughing fits at times! I think it says a lot about the players that are clearly unwell that they still put themselves through the pain barrier and you can actually see the team bonding closer day by day.

There was an early visit to Lidl this morning and the players were treated to ice lollies and ice creams at lunch – if you have eaten pasta and the like for four days flat, you have no idea what that means and they greeted the treats with all the enthusiasm of 9-year-olds when an ice cream van pulls up! It resembles I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here over here!

More gym work and testing followed before another training session at 5pm. The staff are being taken out for a meal tonight and you have no idea how good it will be to eat real food; meanwhile, looking at the players, they will be in bed by 9pm!

Tomorrow night sees the players and staff go head-to-head for the €100 prize at the vice chairman’s quiz night. If last year’s was anything to go by, it’ll be another hard-fought and keenly contested event. Stand by for legal challenges and accusations of cheating!
