Macca makes a date with 2016

Daryl McMahon has his sights set firmly on 2016 as Fleet move into the New Year with promotion on their minds.

The Fleet boss has had something of a frenetic 2015 that he admits he couldn’t possibly have foreseen as the last new year approached.

“Things change so fast,” he told FleetOnline. “It’s been a mad year for me from when I first took over from Steve [Brown] as caretaker, the game v Hendon. I know that was 2014 but it was part of that same last season. Then I had my daughter the next day!”

It wasn’t just that roles changed, as he also – briefly – moved clubs.

“It was strange, going from Fleet captain last January to Boreham Wood player, then back here as Fleet caretaker and then manager in May,” McMahon reflected. “It’s been a crazy year, but a great one, too. I’m on a fantastic learning curve and to be able to get into Christmas and be seven points clear and a game in hand, then come out of it 10 points to the good, is something I wouldn’t have believed. Obviously you aim to do that when you sit down and plan in the close season, but you never know how it’s going to go.”

McMahon’s record, including his stints as caretaker, has seen him preside over 32 games in all competitions, winning 22 of those and scoring 63 goals in the process. He also won the Vanarama National League South manager of the month award for September.

“I’m really looking forward to 2016. I’ve only been a manager for five months and over that time had great support from the board and Peter Varney. And we have a great staff as well who have immense experience. But it’s been a fantastic year for me personally and we all desperately want to deliver on 2015 by doing the business in 2016.”
