Fleet vice chairman Peter Varney personally signalled the official end of summer by allowing himself to be doused in ice-cold water by Daryl McMahon as part of the ice-bucket challenge to raise awareness of ALS/MND.
Academy manager and skipper McMahon prepared extra-cold water in an ice box which he then gleefully emptied over the vice chairman.
Varney said, “I was nominated by Ben May and am naturally disappointed that he has seen fit to target a defenceless pensioner like myself in this way. Bearing in mind how cold it has been today, I can only hope and pray that I avoid a hypothermia episode in the next 24 hours.
“I would also like to thank Daryl McMahon for his enthusiasm in making the water as cold as he possibly could and look forward to rejecting anything he asks me for going forward.”
Peter Varney in turn nominated club secretary Peter Danzey, Mark Spurgeon of MAPS Activities and Head Groundsman, Craig Freeman.
