Fleet round off a good week for the gaffer

Daryl McMahon and his Fleet side have more than a week off the pitch now before the Boxing Day derby and the boss was delighted with the three points this afternoon.

“It’s been a very good week and today we were very good,” he told BBC Radio Kent’s Charles Webster. “The first half technically we could possibly have been a bit tighter with our passes but in the second half we got stronger and stronger and I thought we dominated it really. We created a number of chances that we should have taken.”

Gosport rarely troubled his back line and McMahon was pleased that his unchanged line-up did the job. “[Gosport threatened] only from free-kicks and they were poor free-kicks, there were a couple of tackles that we didn’t need to make but we restricted them to not a lot in open play. I’ve been the same in my time here. I don’t care what your name is, you’ve got to perform to get into the team and I thought Dave [Winfield] and Clarkey over the last three games have been outstanding along with Marvin McCoy.”

And goalscorer Darren McQueen added two more to his impressive stats to justify his recall to the starting lineup in the past two games. “He’s quick, his control’s terrific, his movement’s good and his attitude’s terrific as well,” McMahon said. “We’re pleased to have him and long may it continue, him scoring goals for us.”

With a Dartford double-header ahead of him, McMahon is confident his side’s form gives them impetus for the festive period. “It’ll be a good game here and we’re looking forward to getting over there and giving them a good game. We’ll know what the game means to the fans and the whole club.

“We’ve evolved from day one to now and hopefully it continues and we keep on getting better. We’re nowhere near where we want to be at still. There’s still lots to improve on the performance today. But we’ve got some very good players and they’re working hard to bring success to the club.

“Barring the start of the season, our form from 5th September to now, we’ve only lost one game, drawn two and won the rest in the league. So we’ve been in good form for a couple of months and we’re ticking along nicely. I know Maidenhead won again today, they’re the team out in front, so we’ll see what happens in the second half of the season.”
